Grant out to re-brand Blues

Avram Grant wants Chelsea to move beyond the era of Jose Mourinho by playing an attacking style of football to capture the imagination in the same way as Manchester United and Barcelona.

Mourinho spoke this week in Spain and revealed he would welcome an eventual return to English football, adding he felt "nothing" for his successor.

Grant's response was diplomatic, although he did offer a Mourinho-esque joke: "Why is the fish on the table? Because it opened his mouth."

Grant did not take the bait when asked about Mourinho's comments but did reveal his aim of making Chelsea globally known for attacking football.

Succeeding in this would be a contrast to Mourinho's style, where there was a perception that results were the all-important factor.

"We want to play football first that people enjoy," said Grant.

"Of course, if we play positive football but don't win games, that's no good.

"We want to enjoy the style of football we play inside the club, but also other people outside to enjoy it.

"If we can achieve that, I'll be happy. I think it's possible for us to play football that people want to see. If we're a big club, we need to look for that. But it won't come in one day.

"United didn't win the championship for many years, and Barcelona didn't happen overnight. They built something. You can see now what they've built. We're trying to do the same thing here."

Grant believes his squad are still learning how to adapt to that mindset. They face the different prospect of Coca-Cola Championship opposition in tonight's FA Cup quarter-final at Barnsley.

"I asked from the first moment for them to play football in the way they need in modern football," said the Chelsea boss.

"It's not good for a big club to play defensive football. A lot of big clubs have a lot of supporters all over the world, because they play an attractive style.

"But you've got to learn from your mistakes. In Greece against Olympiacos, we controlled the game but we probably created two chances all game. We need to know how to play against their system."

Grant insists he is relishing the pressure that comes with managing Chelsea and gave his light-hearted take on his situation.
